Kate Morton: The Lake House

The Lake House

Description

The Lake House by Kate Morton is the mysterious and enchanting fifth novel from the number one bestselling author of The House at Riverton and The Secret Keeper. A missing child ...June 1933, and the Edevane family's country house, Loeanneth, is polished and gleaming, ready for the much-anticipated Midsummer Eve party. Alice Edevane, sixteen years old and a budding writer, is especially excited. Not only has she worked out the perfect twist for her novel, she's also fallen helplessly in love with someone she shouldn't. But by the time midnight strikes and fireworks light up the night skies, the Edevane family will have suffered a loss so great that they leave Loeanneth forever. An abandoned house ...Seventy years later, after a particularly troubling case, Sadie Sparrow is sent on an enforced break from her job with the Metropolitan Police. She retreats to her beloved grandfather's cottage in Cornwall but soon finds herself at a loose end. Until one day, Sadie stumbles upon an abandoned house surrounded by overgrown gardens and dense woods, and learns the story of a baby boy who disappeared without a trace. An unsolved mystery ...Meanwhile, in the attic writing room of her elegant Hampstead home, the formidable Alice Edevane, now an old lady, leads a life as neatly plotted as the bestselling detective novels she writes. Until a young police detective starts asking questions about her family's past, seeking to resurrect the complex tangle of secrets Alice has spent her life trying to escape...

Ever since the landmark publication of Susan Sontag's `On Photography`, it has been impossible to look at photographs, particularly those of violence and suffering, without questioning our role as photographic voyeur. Are we desensitized by the proliferation of these images? Or do the images stir our own sense of justice and act as a call to arms? Are we consuming the suffering of others? What should our responses to these images be? To answer these questions, `Picturing Atrocity` brings together essays from some of the foremost writers on photography today, including Rebecca Solnit, Alfredo Jaar, Ariella Azoulay, John Lucaites, Robert Hariman, and Susan Meiselas to offer close readings of images that reveal the realities behind the photographs, the subjects and the photographers. From the massacre of the Sioux Indians at The Lake House ebook pdf Wounded Knee to the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib, from famine in China to apartheid in South Africa, `Picturing Atrocity` examines a broad spectrum of photographs. Each essay focuses specifically on an iconic image, offering a distinct approach and context, in order to enable us to look again - this time more closely - at the picture.

Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead

Description

Researcher and thought leader Dr. Brene Brown offers a powerful new vision in Daring Greatly, the numbered 1 New York Times Bestseller, Oprah pick, and TED talk hit that encourages us to embrace vulnerability and imperfection, to live wholeheartedly and courageously. Every time we are introduced to someone new, try to be creative, or start a difficult conversation, we take a risk. We feel uncertain and exposed. We feel vulnerable. Most of us try to fight those feelings - we strive to appear perfect. But in a powerful new vision Dr. Brene Brown challenges everything we think we know about vulnerability, and dispels the widely accepted myth that it's a weakness. She argues that vulnerability is in fact a strength, and when we shut ourselves off from revealing our true selves we grow distanced from the things that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Daring Greatly is the culmination of 12 years of groundbreaking social research, across the home, relationships, work, and parenting. It is an invitation to be courageous; to show up and let ourselves be seen, even when there are no guarantees. This is vulnerability. This is daring greatly. "Brilliantly insightful. I can't stop thinking about this book". (Gretchen Rubin). "A wonderful book. I couldn't put it down". (Seth Godin). "This is big, big, big, big, BIG!" (Oprah Winfrey). Brene Brown, Ph.D., LMSW is a New York Times bestselling author and a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. Her groundbreaking work was the subject of a PBS special, and has been featured on NPR and CNN. Her 2010 TEDx talk on the topic of vulnerability went viral and has been translated into 38 languages. Brene is also the author of The Gifts of Imperfection and I Thought It Was Just Me (but it isn't).

Deliver Me from Evil: A Sadistic Foster Mother, a Childhood Torn Apart

Description

'When I was a little girl I believed what I was told over and over again: that I was evil, that I deserved to be tortured because I was the Devil's child ...' In April 2007 foster-mother Eunice Spry was sentenced to fourteen years in prison for her sadistic abuse of the children in her care. The details of her cruelty were so sickening they shocked the country. Alloma Gilbert was one of Spry's young victims, sent to live with her at the age of six and left at her mercy for eleven brutal years. Eunice used her own twisted religious beliefs as an excuse for punishing her foster children. When she took them to live on an isolated farmhouse, the abuse escalated to terrifying levels - a stick was thrust down Alloma's throat so often it was stained red with blood, she was starved for over a year and survived only by secretly eating pigswill, and the vicious beatings were relentless. At the age of seventeen she finally escaped but, alone in the outside world, she fell prey to abusive men. It was the birth of her baby daughter that saved her, that finally taught her what love really is. Written with powerful honesty, Deliver Me From Evil is a moving and inspiring story of survival.

Mein Kampf: Adolf Hitler's Autobiography and Political Manifesto, Nazi Agenda Prior to World War II, the Third Reich, Aka My Strug

Description

Adolf Hitler dictated the first half of Mein Kampf in 1923 while in prison following his unsuccessful revolt in Munich. Mein Kampf is part autobiography and part political ideology, explaining the mission statement of Adolf Hitler and the events in his life that shaped these ideas. Hitler wanted to title the book Four and a Half Years of Struggle Against Lies, Stupidity and Cowardice, but his publisher convinced him to change the title to Mein Kampf (My Struggle). The original title reflects Hitler's attitude at the time regarding politics, and it reveals much of the subject matter of the book. It is invaluable to see inside the mind of such a tyrant to learn his motivations and the methods he used to gain power and commit such horrific atrocities. Studying the misdeeds of the past is necessary in preventing them from happening again. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."-George Santayana.

Poseidon's Arrow

Description

It is the greatest advance in American defense technology in decades an attack submarine capable of incredible underwater speeds. There is only one problem: A key element of the prototype is missing and the man who developed it is dead. At the same time, ships have started vanishing mid-ocean, usually never to be found again, but when they are, sometimes bodies are found aboard burned to a crisp. What is going on? And what does it have to do with an Italian submarine that vanished in 1943? Or did it? It is up to NUMA director Dirk Pitt and his team, aided by a beautiful NCIS agent and by Pitt s children, Dirk, Jr., and Summer, to go on a desperate international chase to find the truth. But what they discover is a much, much greater threat than even they imagined "

This is the definitive centenary edition of the work of one of America's greatest poets, recognised today as a master of her art and acclaimed by poets and readers alike. Her poems display honesty and humour, grief and acceptance, observing nature and human nature with painstaking accuracy. They often start outwardly, with geography and landscape - from New England and Nova Scotia, where Bishop grew up, to Florida and Brazil, where she later lived - and move inexorably toward the interior, exploring questions of knowledge and perception, love and solitude, and the ability or inability of form to control chaos. This new edition, edited by Saskia Hamilton, includes Bishop's four published volumes (North & South, A Cold Spring, Poseidon's Arrow pdf Questions of Travel and Geography III), as well as uncollected poems, translations and an illuminating selection of unpublished manuscript poems, reproduced in facsimile, revealing exactly how finished, or unfinished, Bishop left them. It offers readers the opportunity to enjoy the complete poems of one of the most distinguished American poets of the twentieth century.
